Actions in process
A consultancy contract based in Honduras is underway, and HI is providing technical assistance on disability inclusion to a consortium of organizations in three countries in the region, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. There is currently no HI staff in El Salvador and our organisation is not registered in the country. However, our regional programme, HI in Latin America and the Caribbean, is exploring the possibility of a wider intervention in the country.
HI also worked in El Salvador between 2001 and 2003 to support the population affected by a high intensity earthquake on 13 January 2001.

Situation of the country
Over a million people are estimated to be in need of humanitarian aid in El Salvador, mainly due to extreme weather conditions, the rising cost of living and the large-scale displacement of the population.
Located in a zone affected by the El Niño and La Niña climate phenomena, El Salvador has for some years been experiencing prolonged periods of drought interspersed with intense rainfall, which threaten harvests and increase the risk of food insecurity in the country. The situation is further exacerbated by international economic pressures and high inflation.
As a Central American country, El Salvador is on a busy migration route, and sees major population movements. Many people leave the country in the hope of a better life, while others from other parts of Latin America pass through on their way to the United States. These people have significant needs for protection, shelter, drinking water and food. Lastly, the number of people returning to El Salvador after attempting to emigrate has risen sharply compared to 2023, creating further needs.
