Although many people with disabilities have limited access to healthcare, education, employment, transport and leisure activities, their needs are rarely taken into account. Humanity & Inclusion works with people with disabilities, their families, their communities and a range of organizations for a truly inclusive world where people with disabilities have equal opportunities and rights. We work with disabled people to promote inclusion in education, sports and cultural activities, access to employment, and lobbying governments to ensure equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

Inclusive education

Humanity & Inclusion promotes access for children with disabilities to an education adapted to their needs. The association promotes the integration of children with disabilities into mainstream education. Inclusive education contributes to change of perspective on disability. For this, the association helps schools to accommodate students, adapting if necessary furniture and access to the building, but especially by training teachers to the specific needs of children with disabilities and by educating students and the community about disability.

HI also supports specialized structures (institutions for children with a mental handicap for example) and the creation of integrated classes (classes for children with disabilities inserted into a mainstream school).

Occupational integration

For people with disabilities, exercising a professional activity is an important factor in survival, independence and recognition within their family and community. Humanity & Inclusion promotes the professional integration of people with disabilities - often excluded and without resources - in the local socioeconomic fabric, by supporting individual or collective projects (development of agricultural activities, creation of a bicycle repair workshop, sewing, etc.) and facilitating access to bank loans. It also makes companies aware of the employment of people with disabilities.

Sports and leisure activities

Sports and leisure activities must be designed without discrimination and for all people with disabilities. They convey cross-cutting values such as solidarity, surpassing oneself, mutual aid, self-esteem... HI promotes and develops access to sports and leisure activities for people with disabilities.

Around a third of the 77 million children not attending school are disabled (Education For All, Global Monitoring Report 2010).

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Celebrated on December 3rd every year, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and to mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. Each year the day focuses on a different issue.
